I have been listening to audiobooks for the past 15 years. My favorite books are about productivity, but I also enjoy scientific books describing the functions of our brain and how it’s linked to our actions and behaviours.
I combine my listening with tasks to maximize time — Usually driving, shovelling or mowing the lawn. I “read” my favorite books multiple times and it’s surprising how differently their contents can be interpreted based on my state of mind.
Often, I’ll remember the specific location where passages were previously read. Our memories are carved in deeper when multiple senses were involved in the experience. Sight and hearing seem more prominent in my case.
When I struggle with inspiration or motivation, I put on music I remember hearing in times of productivity or flow. The music does not create inspiration. It merely sets the tone for getting started. Action is the best way to fuel creativity.
